Most AI video generators now have an API, and twelve of the fourteen we checked have some kind of MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. The real difference is what happens after the render: only ShortFast, Revid, Faceless.so and Faceless.video can publish to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube from the API or MCP, while avatar tools like HeyGen and Synthesia and renderers like Shotstack, Creatomate and JSON2Video stop at the file.
This guide is for developers building a content pipeline, agencies wiring video into their own dashboards, and anyone who wants an AI agent to make and post videos. It compares the developer surface, not the video quality.
How we compared
We read each vendor's developer documentation and pricing page on October 22, 2026, and checked five things: whether there is a REST API and which plan includes it, whether there is an MCP server and which clients it documents, whether it sends webhooks, whether it can publish to social accounts, and how API usage is billed. ShortFast is our product and is in the same format. Where a vendor's own pages contradict each other, we say so.

What to look for in a video API
Publishing. Generating a video is half the job. If the goal is a channel that posts every day, an API that can also schedule and publish to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube saves you from building and maintaining the platform integrations, the OAuth flows and TikTok's app audit yourself.
Webhooks. Video renders take minutes. A webhook that calls your server when a render finishes or a post goes live beats polling a status endpoint. Fliki and Captions' API document no webhooks; HeyGen, Synthesia, ShortFast, Creatify, Pictory, Shotstack, Creatomate and JSON2Video do.
How MCP is hosted. A hosted MCP server is a URL you add to Claude or ChatGPT as a connector; a local one runs on your machine through npx or a CLI. Hosted is easier for non-developers; local suits coding agents like Claude Code or Cursor.
How it is billed. Some tools bill API calls from the same credits as the app (ShortFast, Revid, Fliki, Faceless.so). Others sell API access separately: Creatify's API plans start at $99 a month, Pictory's at $99, HeyGen's API is a pay-as-you-go wallet, and Captions' Mirage API is priced per second of avatar video. Separate billing is not worse, but it means two subscriptions to budget.
Tools that generate and publish
ShortFast has a REST API, signed webhooks for every stage (generation, render, schedule, publish and automation events) and a hosted MCP server documented for Claude, ChatGPT, n8n and Make, with tools that mirror the REST endpoints one to one. API keys, webhooks and MCP keys are available on every plan, including a free workspace with 50 credits every 30 days, enough for 3 generations and 3 watermarked renders a month without publishing. Paid plans start at $19 a month and add publishing to TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts and recurring automations. Generation, rendering and publishing draw on the same workspace credits and plan limits whether the call comes from the app, the API or MCP.
Revid has a public API with a credit estimator, a CLI, and a hosted MCP server with 30 tools including publish now and schedule, documented for Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf. It publishes to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and X, with Facebook pending Meta's review. Its FAQ says every plan includes the API, while its $39 Hobby card lists no API or publishing; Growth, also $39, does. Its render webhook is a completion callback.
Faceless.so has a scoped REST API, a CLI, a Claude Skill and an MCP server that runs hosted or locally, listed in Claude's connector directory. It publishes to seven platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads. Its pricing page lists API access on the $99 Ultra and $199 Agency plans. We found no webhooks in its docs.
Faceless.video has a hosted MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT that creates videos, revises scripts and creates, pauses or reschedules auto-posting series. Its API portal is behind a login, so its endpoints, plan and webhooks could not be checked.
Avatar and ad tools
HeyGen has the broadest agent support, with a hosted MCP server documented for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI and more, plus signed webhooks and a CLI. Its docs call MCP trial-scale and bill production API keys to a separate pay-as-you-go plan. It does not publish to social accounts.
Synthesia includes API access from its $89 Pro plan, with API minutes deducted from the plan's allowance, signed webhooks and a hosted MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT that it describes as still under active development.
Creatify sells API plans separately from $99 a month, with webhooks; its hosted MCP server for ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code and Codex uses the web plan's credits instead.
Arcads has an API from its Pro plan, including social-listening lookups, and a hosted MCP server on every plan; its prices are shown only inside the app, and we found no outbound webhooks in its API spec.
Captions' Mirage API is pay as you go, at $0.15 per second of Avatar X video and $0.15 per minute of captioning, and covers avatar video and captions only. Its MCP is a documentation-search server whose setup page now returns a 404.
Text-to-video suites
Fliki includes its API on the $88 Premium plan, billed from the same credits as the app. It has no webhooks (you poll for status) and we found no MCP server.
Pictory sells a separate API plan from $99 a month for 600 video minutes, with per-job webhooks, while its hosted MCP server for Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf bills the regular app plan from $29.
Renderers you drive with code
Shotstack, Creatomate and JSON2Video do not write scripts or choose visuals for you: you describe the video as a JSON timeline or a template and they render it. All three have webhooks and an MCP server. Shotstack starts at $39 a month for 250 minutes, with pay as you go at 20 cents a minute; Creatomate at $54 a month with the API on all plans; JSON2Video at $49.95 a month. None publishes to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube; that is left to you or to Zapier, Make or n8n.
Let an agent post, carefully
An agent that can publish can also publish the wrong thing to a real account. ShortFast's MCP documentation recommends confirming generation and publishing with a human before the agent runs them, and Faceless.video prices and confirms each one-off video before it runs. Whatever you use, keep a human approval step on publishing until the pipeline has proven itself, and remember that YouTube and TikTok judge the account, not the tool, when uploads look mass-produced.
Which one to pick
An agent or app that makes and posts short videos: ShortFast for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, with webhooks on every stage and a free API tier to prototype on; Revid if you want to pick AI models per scene and post to X too; Faceless.so if you need seven platforms.
Talking avatars and translation from code: HeyGen or Synthesia.
UGC ads in a marketing stack: Creatify or Arcads.
Full control of every frame in code: Shotstack, Creatomate or JSON2Video, with publishing handled elsewhere.
FAQ
Common questions
- Which AI video generators have an MCP server?
- Of the fourteen tools we checked on October 22, 2026, twelve have some MCP route: ShortFast, Revid, Faceless.so, Faceless.video, HeyGen, Synthesia, Creatify, Arcads, Pictory, Shotstack, Creatomate and JSON2Video. Fliki has none, and Captions offers only a documentation-search MCP.
- Which video APIs can post to TikTok and YouTube?
- ShortFast (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts), Revid (TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, X), Faceless.so (seven platforms) and Faceless.video (through its auto-posting series). The avatar tools and the JSON renderers produce files and leave publishing to you.
- Is API access billed separately from the app?
- It depends on the vendor. ShortFast, Revid, Fliki and Faceless.so bill API use from the same credits as the app, and ShortFast's API, webhooks and MCP server are on every plan, including a free tier. Creatify and Pictory sell separate API plans from $99 a month, HeyGen's API is a pay-as-you-go wallet, and Captions' Mirage API is priced per second of video.
- Can ChatGPT or Claude make and post videos for me?
- Yes, through an MCP server. Add a tool's MCP URL as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT, and the assistant can generate videos and, with ShortFast, Revid, Faceless.so or Faceless.video, schedule or publish them. Keep a human approval step on publishing.
