TikTok Hook Generator

Generate opening lines built for TikTok's feed, where you have about one second before the thumb decides.

Hook styles (all)

Hooks are the first two seconds. The rest of the video still has to deliver, see the script writer and our breakdown of why hooks work.

TikTok is the least forgiving feed of the three big short-form platforms. Viewers arrive with no context, no subscription relationship, and a thumb already in motion. Whatever you say in the first second is the entire pitch.

Enter your topic above and you'll get 20 openings built from formulas that hold attention on TikTok specifically, each with a short explanation of the mechanism behind it.

[ 01 ]How it works

Using the TikTok Hook Generator

  1. 01

    Describe the video

A few specific words beat a category. 'Cold email that gets replies' outperforms 'business tips'.

  2. 02

    Lean into fast styles

On TikTok, curiosity gap, mistake and contrarian openers tend to outperform slower story setups.

  3. 03

    Cut the preamble

Delete anything before the hook. No intro, no 'hey guys', no logo sting. The hook is frame one.

  4. 04

    Test three versions

Same video, three openings, posted across separate days. Compare the drop-off in the first three seconds.

What makes a TikTok hook different

TikTok's For You feed is almost entirely interest-based rather than follower-based, which means most of the people seeing your video have never heard of you. There's no accumulated goodwill to spend, so the hook has to work cold, every time, for a stranger.

The feed is also faster. TikTok viewers scroll at a higher rate than Shorts or Reels viewers, and the platform's own creator guidance has consistently pointed at the first frames as the deciding factor. In practice that means a TikTok hook needs to land in about one second, where a Shorts hook can reasonably take two.

This rewards abruptness. Openings that would feel rushed on YouTube feel normal on TikTok, and openings that feel normal on YouTube feel slow here. Drop the setup, start mid-thought, and trust the viewer to catch up.

The visual hook matters as much as the spoken one

Every hook on this page is a line of text or speech, but TikTok is a visual feed and the two work together. A strong line over a static talking head competes with a weak line over motion, and motion frequently wins.

The practical version: give the first frame something to look at. Movement, an unexpected object, text on screen, a visible change. The spoken hook then explains what the viewer is already looking at, rather than asking them to wait for a payoff.

On-screen text is close to mandatory. A large share of TikTok viewing happens with sound off or sound low, and a spoken hook with no text version simply doesn't exist for those viewers. Put the hook on screen in the first frame, not as a caption that fades in two seconds later.

Hooks and the TikTok comment loop

Comments are unusually load-bearing on TikTok. They extend watch time, they surface the video to the commenter's network, and a busy comment section keeps viewers on the video longer than the video itself justifies.

Contrarian and ranking hooks are the most reliable comment generators, because they invite disagreement, and disagreement is the cheapest comment there is. 'Ranking every X from worst to best' will produce a comment section arguing about the ranking regardless of how good the ranking is.

The trade-off is that contrarian hooks attract hostile comments alongside engaged ones. That's usually a net positive for reach and occasionally a net negative for your day, which is worth knowing before you build a whole account on the format.

[ 02 ]FAQ

Common questions

How long should a TikTok hook be?
About one second, or roughly five to eight spoken words. TikTok's feed moves faster than Shorts or Reels and viewers arrive with no relationship to you, so anything that reads as setup is a place for them to leave.
Should the hook be spoken or written on screen?
Both. A large share of TikTok viewing happens with the sound down, so a hook that only exists in audio doesn't exist for those viewers. Put the line on screen in the first frame and say it at the same time.
Do hooks still matter if my video is short?
More, not less. A 15-second video with a weak opening loses viewers at the same rate as a 60-second one, and it has less runway to recover. Retention is measured as a proportion, so a short video with a bad hook still reads as a bad video to the algorithm.
What hook styles work best on TikTok?
Curiosity gap, mistake and warning, and contrarian openers tend to outperform on TikTok specifically, because they land fast and don't require setup. Story openings work but need a stronger first line than they do on YouTube, where viewers give a little more runway.
