Validate an X handle against the strictest character limit of any major platform, and get alternatives that still fit in 15 characters.

Grabbing the same handle everywhere? TikTok, Instagram, YouTube · all free tools
X has the tightest handle rules of any major platform: 15 characters maximum, and letters, numbers and underscores only. No periods, no hyphens. If you're picking one name to use across every platform, this is the page that decides what's possible.
The checker validates your handle against those rules instantly and suggests alternatives that still fit inside the limit. X aggressively rate-limits requests that don't come from a logged-in browser, so availability is confirmed via a one-click link rather than guessed at.
Type the username you want, with or without the @. The 15-character limit is enforced as you type.
X allows letters, numbers and underscores only. Any period or hyphen is flagged immediately.
Open the verification link. A live profile means the handle is taken, a 'this account doesn't exist' page means it's free.
If it fits on X, it almost certainly fits on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Check those before you commit.
Handles on X are capped at 15 characters and may contain only letters, numbers and underscores. Periods and hyphens are rejected outright, which matters because both are legal on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. X also blocks handles containing 'admin' or 'twitter' in most configurations, a holdover from the platform's impersonation rules.
Handles are not case sensitive, so @YourBrand and @yourbrand are the same account, though X preserves your capitalisation for display. Your display name is a separate 50-character field that accepts spaces, capitals and emoji.
Fifteen characters goes fast. 'yourbrandmedia' is 14 and only just fits. Any two-word brand plus a suffix like 'official' or 'studio' is over the limit before you start, which is why so many X handles end up with underscores and abbreviations that look nothing like the account's name elsewhere.
This is the single most useful piece of cross-platform naming advice: start with X. If a name works within 15 characters using only letters, numbers and underscores, it will work everywhere else. Do it the other way around and you'll pick something on Instagram that simply cannot exist on X, and end up with mismatched handles permanently.
The mismatch has a real cost. Cross-promotion stops being one sentence ('I'm @yourbrand everywhere') and becomes a list nobody remembers. Every platform you add compounds it.
If your brand name genuinely can't fit, the usual fix is to drop the least load-bearing word rather than abbreviate it. 'yourbrandmedia' truncated to 'yourbrand' reads far better than 'yrbrndmedia', and it's shorter, which helps on every platform.
X has an inactive account policy that in principle allows dormant handles to be reclaimed by the platform, and it has periodically announced purges of inactive accounts. In practice, handles very rarely become available this way on a timeline you can plan around, and there is no way to reserve or queue for one.
There's no official marketplace either. Buying a handle violates X's terms of service and risks suspension of both accounts, with no recourse if the seller reneges.
The realistic path is to pick something available now. A handle you control today is worth considerably more than a better one you might get in an indefinite future.
